Explicandem est Creaturae (Explanation of the Creatures)

Thoma Rattius

Translated from the original Latin by me.

Quicksilver is the foundational metal, the lifeblood of the creatures and the physical manifestation of the spirit within these beings. They lack a soul and lack a connected body, though they do have bodies, and are, therefore, not living creatures. This is why they long for the card. They desire to be removed from this world because of the overwhelming completeness of it. This is not to say they are incomplete, because these creatures are not wholly incomplete. It is, though, a different kind of completeness.

Quicksilver provides the ability to imitate life, then, within these creatures.

The next three styles of these creatures, then, are fire, earth, and water. It might be noted that air is the only fundamental element left out from this list, but it is not. Air is among all of them, proving a fundamental piece of their makeup.

There is a final group of these creatures rumored to exist, though there has been no evidence that this group does exist. They are called the elementals, beings comprised of equal amounts of quicksilver, fire, earth, water, light, and dark without reverting back to quicksilver. How this could be, it is not explained.

These creatures have been created to protect each alchemists’ secrets and to avoid direct violence. So far, they have proven invincible, though they can be incapacitated and forced back into the card they live within. Humans cannot incapacitate or force them, however, but these creatures will gladly return to their card when they have finished their required job.

Fire emphasizes the ferocity and speed of the creatures. Earth emphasizes the growth and adaptability of the creatures. Water emphasizes the defense and resolve of these creatures.

From these three come two more, those being light and dark. Light comes from fire when fire is increased. Dark comes from the depths of water, implying an increase in the water. Light, then, becomes the representation of good, emphasizing healing and circumventing violence. Dark, then, becomes the representation of evil, entrapping and abusing its opponents.
